Brighton are still searching for their first victory of the new Premier League campaign, coming up short against Everton at their new home. For Yankuba Minteh, there was frustration at the defeat, but he spoke positively about the fans of the Toffees as one of the two reasons for this outcome.
Brighton blew a one-goal lead at the Amex Stadium in injury time against Fulham on the opening matchday. For other reasons, this result is also a tough one to take, as the Seagulls are still winless.
“This is not the result we want. We want to win but this is what we get. I think we need to push more. We need to be demanding in ourselves like to give it more 100%. This is not the
result we want but we go back and then work hard and then think about the next step.”
Missed chances have haunted the Seagulls many times in the last twelve months, and few matches will be more painful than this defeat. Kaoru Mitoma made magic to crash a volley onto the bar, Jan Paul van Hecke hit the post, Danny Welbeck fired a cutback from Yankuba Minteh over the target, and Matt O’Riley fluffed his lines from a poor James Tarkowski back pass before the half was over.
After the restart, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall handled a strike from Minteh inside the box, but Jordan Pickford parried Welbeck’s penalty. The winger was clear that the group have to accept responsibility.
“It’s football. you know, you get your chances, you didn’t score. When the opponent get their chances, they will capitalize on it. We just need to work hard, just get back in the training and try to think about what is in front. We want to win, but we didn’t, but we need to think about what is in front now.”
The 21-year-old recorded an assist for Mitoma to mark the beginning of the Fabian Hurzeler era with a 3-0 triumph over the Toffees last August. The hosts have now left Goodison Park, and Minteh mentioned that the desire to win the first Premier Leaguegame at the new ground was a motivator.
“They’re home. They have the crowd and then they are good. Everything is a good team. It’s not a bad team. It’s a good team and they take their chances. That’s all I’d say. That’s why it is difficult for us.”
