When the U.S. Open teed off Thursday at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania, Scottie Scheffler, fresh off his PGA Championship win, was the favorite to win his second major in a row. After the first round, it was 2021 champ Jon Rahm who was favored after a 1-under 69, tied for sixth.
Now, with second-round play suspended, Sam Burns has claimed both the lead and favored status entering Saturday’s action, with Viktor Hovland behind him in odds and third on the scoreboard. Scheffler, tied for 23rd, still has the third-shortest odds at +750.
J.J. Spaun, who finished as the leader after the first round, is in second place and has seen his odds cut from 15-1 after the first to +850 entering Saturday’s play. Defending champion Bryson DeChambeau is 10 over par and will miss the cut, while Rory McIlroy, who had the third-shortest odds to begin the tournament, is tied for 41st and saw his odds fall from 35-1 entering the day to 60-1 at the end of play.
Second-round play resumes Saturday with 13 players still to finish their second round, after which will begin the third round.
