Tiger Woods had intended to compete in the upcoming Genesis Invitational tournament, due to take place from Thursday at the world-famous Torrey Pines golf course in San Diego, however, he issued a statement on Monday, the 10th of February, to indicate that he would not tee it up as he continues to mourn the recent loss of his mother.
Kultida Woods died aged 78 on February 4. She was a mainstay at some of his biggest successes, including his 2019 victory at The Masters — arguably one of the greatest comeback wins in all sport.
Woods, 49, said is not ready to compete as he processes her passing.

Tiger Woods Update on Return to Golf
World’s greatest golfer said he will still attend the tournament
“I planned to tee it up this week,” said Woods in a statement on X, formerly Twitter, “but I’m just not ready.”
“I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.”
“Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”
Woods last played competitive golf on the PGA Tour in July 2024 when he vied for The Open championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in the UK, but failed to make the cut as he scored +14 after two days.
The veteran athlete was ever-present during the inaugural Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL), which is a revolutionary indoor golf game that took the world by storm earlier this year.
As Woods mentioned, he’ll still attend the Genesis Invitiational later this week but will not compete.
Scottie Scheffler, the world No.1 golfer today, is favorite to lift the trophy, however, he’ll have to improve on recent form finishing tied 25th at the recent Phoenix Open, and tied ninth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, earlier in the year.
