Who’s in danger of missing the cut?
A number of former Masters champions are at serious risk of missing the cut at the Masters.
Players inside the top 50 after the second round, including those on ties, make the cut.
As for anyone who falls below it, that is their weekend at Augusta done and dusted.
Dustin Johnson, who won the Masters in 2020, is one of those big names at risk as he sits T62 having finished the second round with a score of +3.
Another former Masters winner, Sergio Garcia, is also below the projected cut having finished the opening two rounds +4.
Brooks Koepka (T72, +5) is also on the brink of going home.
As is Angel Cabrera, who is playing in his first Masters since 2019 after he was convicted of domestic violence and jailed for 30 months.
Cabrera, the 2009 Masters winner, is tied for 93rd with a score of +11.
Latest leaderboard as DeChambeau delights
Bryson DeChambeau is well in the mix at Augusta after he carded a second round score of 68 (-4).
The American’s strong showing left him with a total score of -7, one stroke behind leader Justin Rose.
DeChambeau was left to rue a bogey on the par-three 16th but made up for it with a birdie on the 17th.
Attention now turns towards Australia’s Jason Day, Corey Conners and defending Masters champ Scottie Scheffler who are all tied for fourth but are yet to finish their round.
-8 Justin Rose (F)
-7 Bryson DeChambeau (F)
-6 Rory McIlroy (F)
-5 Matt McCarty (F), Jason Day (8), Shane Lowry (F), Corey Conners (10), Scottie Scheffler (7)
Rory bounces back in style
After the demoralising finish to day one with two double bogies down the stretch, McIlroy has shown all his class with a fantastic second round.
Four birdies and one eagle coming up the 18th had him within two of Justin Rose’s lead – and he makes par on the last for a round of 66 to be within touching distance of his European Ryder Cup teammate.
That’s a back nine of 31 and with a chance of some wind and rain through the afternoon he is going to be there or thereabouts.
Great comeback – the Grand Slam is still on.
Rose speaks on his second round
Rose, who leads the field as it stands, has been discussing his round.
“Those two fives (late bogeys) could have been two birdie putts quite easily and changed the complexion of the round, but I’m in a great position going into the weekend,” he said.
“Sometimes you have got to knock on the door.
“I think the leaderboard is stacking up favourably for world-class players, so you are going to have to play good golf.”
Four in a row as red hot Hovland on the march
Viktor Hovland landed a bomb on the 16th green to make it four birdies in a row as he marched on to six under.
He is tied for third with McIlroy, behind Rose and DeChambeau.
Check out his effort on the 16th hole below.
