Sage Valley Junior Invitational Golf Tournament returns this week

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Sage Valley Junior Invitational has returned to Graniteville.

The tournament showcases the world’s best junior golfers, and for the first time, they’re extending the invitational. Sixty of the world’s best junior golfers will gather in Aiken County to play in the 15th annual Sage Valley Junior Invitational.

It’s considered by many to be a premier venue across the U.S. You might notice a little bit more of the golf course this year.

From Helene, Sage Valley lost more than 1,000 trees, so it’s going to look a little different.

Not only will some of the landscaping be different, but so will the tournament itself.

This is the first year ever that we’ll see four rounds of play.

“This is the first year we’re playing 72 holes instead of 54, so we’re cognizant of the fact that they need to rest their legs,” said Ronnie Lee. “Another reason that we’re only letting them practice nine holes today. They can go to the range and then we’re going to have a little fun on the par three. But we’re trying to save their legs because they’re going to play four rounds for the first time.”

Your eyes might find the big names of Charlie Woods and Kai Trump this week, but also be on the lookout for something else.

Two gold jacket winners are back again this year for seconds.

“This is the first year that we have returning champions so it’s going to be great to see how they play,” Lee said.

Unlike the last several Sage Valley Junior Invitationals, you will have to pay admission to get in to any of the tournament rounds this week Wednesday through Saturday.

You can pay $25 for one-day access or you can pay $90 for a pass that will carry you Wednesday through Saturday.
