On the injury, Hovland said: “There is nothing more I would like to do than be out there representing Team Europe and trying to help them win the Ryder Cup today. Not being able to do so is pretty heartbreaking. I will be backing my team as hard as I can and rooting them on.”

Dr Andrew Murray, the Ryder Cup Europe’s Chief Medical Officer, added: “Viktor’s pain started during the morning foursomes, where he received treatment and medication from the physio and medical team on course during the match. Following this he attempted to warm up for Saturday fourballs, but experienced increasing pain while swinging a golf club, and a lack of range of movement in his neck and withdrew, being replaced by Tyrrell Hatton.

“An MRI was arranged following liaison between Team Europe and PGA of America on-site medical team, which confirmed a flare up of a previous injury – a disc bulge in his neck by a medical imaging specialist.

“This morning, Viktor received ongoing treatment but unfortunately he is not able to rotate or flex his neck to one side making playing the singles impossible.”

Similar second shots from the opening pairing, with Rose going past the pin and Young falling short. Similar distances though.

The American is about 25 feet away, but he produces a superb putt and the crowd goes wild!

The so-called ‘envelope rule’ has been triggered after Hovland’s withdrawal.

Here is the Ryder Cup’s official definition of the rule:

“When the Captains lodge their team selection for Singles play, they must provide a sealed envelope containing the name of one player who is regarded as having been paired with a player who, through illness, injury or other emergency reason, has to withdraw from the other side.

“Such pairing is regarded as a tied match. If this requires the re-pairing of a match, this will be done down the order of the play. If two players (one from each side) withdraw, then they are treated as having been paired together (regardless of hidden selection) and the two other players from the particular matches will play each other.

“This agreement covers withdrawal of only one player per side up to 30 minutes before the first Singles match commences for the day. The following clause covers a withdrawal, through illness or injury, from 30 minutes prior to the first match commencing until all matches have teed off.”

Viktor Hovland has withdrawn from Ryder Cup singles due to injury to trigger the bizarre envelope rule.

Hovland was set to face Harris English on the final day in New York, but Europe’s leader Luke Donald is one player down, meaning the envelope rule, where both captains select a player before the event in case of withdrawals from Sunday singles.

More news from Bethpage as Viktor Hovland has been forced to withdraw from today’s action due to aggravating a neck injury yesterday.

He was supposed to tee off in the final match against Harris English, but that will now be settled as a tie.

Europe built a commanding lead to move to the brink of victory with USA facing a hammering on home soil, but Bradley refuses to accept both he or his players played into the mayhem on Saturday, despite Collin Morikawa and others urging home support to bring “chaos” in the build-up.

A chopping action lifted the ball up neatly, and the precise point at which it pitched earned the respect, even in this cauldron of golfing battle, of Schauffele with that gesture.
