Ryder Cup 2025 live: Day 1 scores as Europe make history with blistering start against USA

Keegan Bradley leads raucous USA fans on Bethpage Black first tee at Ryder Cup 2025

Donald Trump is set to arrive at the Ryder Cup to a sea of blue on the early leaderboard as Europe dominated Team USA and quietened the home crowd to take a 3-1 lead after the opening foursomes session.

For the first time in Ryder Cup history, Europe scored the first three points away from home as Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton overcame a shaky start to beat USA stars Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas 4&3, with Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood surging to a 5&4 win over Collin Morikawa and Harris English

After Matthew Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg took down World No 1 Scottie Scheffler and Russel Henley 5&3, the USA’s hopes of avoiding a morning landslide fell on the final group, but Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantley finally got a point on the board, beating Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland on the final hole.

Ryder Cup organisers stepped up security ahead of Trump’s visit, with the US President set to arrive at Bethpage Black towards the end of the opening session. Trump is expected to watch the action for around three hours before departing ahead of the end of the day’s play.

DeChambeau, who arrived onto the first tee draped in the American flag, has said Trump’s appearance can “inspire” the United States to victory, and it sets up a mouthwatering start to the weekend.

USA 1-3 Europe

A good morning nonetheless for Europe!

The visiting team have three big wins to start the opening foursome matches, and it was the first time in Ryder Cup history that Europe won the first three points in the USA.

“If we’re only going to win one point, it might as well be the anchor match” says Xander Schauffele after his win.

US take their first point of the day!

MacIntyre lines up the par putt to keep the pair in with a chance of half a point…but he goes wide!

‘Wild cheers and laughs’

“Wild cheers and laughs as Bob MacIntyre’s approach balloons into the greenside bunker after Xander Schauffele’s ball cosied up to the hole moments before.

“These fans are finally revelling in the Europeans suffering a setback or two. The noise has cranked up around the 18th.

“Hovland is still fighting though and sprints down into the deep pit of the bunker. The Norwegian likely has to hole this to salvage anything.

“It’s not bad, it skids and then grinds to a stop. No concession. Bradley nearby is tense, an assistant throws his arms over his shoulders to reassure him.”

Europe fighting for half-point on 18

Schauffele does well with the approach shot, landing within a few feet of the pin.

Plenty to do for MacIntyre here – and he can’t make anything of it. He hooks it into the bunker and the US will surely take their first point of the 2025 Ryder Cup!

Europe fighting for half-point on 18

Cantlay lands on the fairway with the tee shot, while Hovland’s shot is hooked right and finds the rough. Not a good start to the final hole for the visiting team.

‘The loudest cheer of the day’

“That’s the loudest cheer of the day, Bradley jumping up and furiously urging the crowd to raise the volume.

“MacIntyre grimaced as that putt missed, a guaranteed half for the USA and a potential full point, to narrow the gap to just two points.

“There’s relief there, an outpouring of emotion from the fans as the Americans storm to the 18th one up.

US move to 1 up ahead of the 18th

Cantlay has the chance to win the hole from distance, and it’s a great effort, but it falls short. It had the line but not enough power.

MacIntyre now has the chance to take it to the final hole with a tie on 17. Again, he’s just over six feet away, but he misjudges the line and the US go one up on the 18th!

US in good position on 17th

168 yards from tee to pin on the 17th as MacIntyre steps up.

There are some boos and jeers though as he steps back to re-evaluate. Not the best start as he lands in the greenside bunker. He knew right away.

Schauffele’s tee shot is a superb one, finding the green at first ask.

Final match level on 17th hole

Hovland with the chance to birdie the hole. Again, it’s about six feet away – but it curls wide!

A chance for the US then, with Cantlay a little further out and going up the hill as he attempts to win the hole.

And he goes wide too! A golden opportunity missed as the 16th ends in a tie.

‘It has really caught fire now’

“The Ryder Cup has really caught fire now, all eyeballs on this final match of the session. Roars echoing around Bethpage, MacIntyre starting to rise to the occasion.

“Donald has just dashed across the fairway to deliver a message to the Scot. The heat is also a factor here, it’s sweltering.

“And the crowd is revelling in two great birdie looks coming up on the 16th green.”
