Rory McIlroy Absence Explained As Lowry And Rose Join Tommy Fleetwood Celebrations At East Lake


On Sunday evening, Tommy Fleetwood finally won his first PGA Tour event, at the 164th time of asking.

The Englishman held his nerve on the back nine to come out three-stroke winner over American Patrick Cantlay, sparking a huge outpour of emotions from the 34-year-old. 

As Fleetwood strode onto the 18th green, there were some notable faces waiting to celebrate with him in the gallery.

Spotted in the crowd celebrating Fleetwood’s win were close friends of his and Ryder Cup teammates, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose, alongside Fleetwood’s family.

Rose was spotted filming Fleetwood with an enormous grin on his face, looking on like a proud father, alongside the Offaly golfer.

Rory McIlroy Absence From Fleetwood Celebrations Explained

There was, however, one notable face missing from the celebrations, Rory McIlroy, who’d shot -6 for the tournament to finish with a share of 23rd place. 

A number of people on social media wondered why McIlroy wasn’t present to congratulate his Ryder Cup teammate in person.

McIlroy’s fourth round had finished around the time Fleetwood had made the turn to the back nine. By the time Fleetwood had won the tournament, McIlroy was 800 miles away.

It turned out he’d left the East Lake course in Atlanta in order to attend the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York.

McIlroy was spotted in the crowd on Sunday evening watching Novak Djokovic playing Learner Tien, flanked by his caddy, Harry Diamond.

 

Speaking after his round, with Fleetwood still out on the course, McIlroy said of the Englishman:

“If he gets it done today, that would be amazing. I think we’d all love him to”

Meanwhile, he admitted that while this weekend was far from his best, his game “feels close, it certainly isn’t far away.”

Rory McIlroy now has his sights set on the Irish Open and the BMW PGA event ahead of next month’s Ryder Cup.

Meanwhile Lowry played his best tournament in a number of week to finish T13th, 8 shots off Fleetwood. Rasmus Hojgaard claimed the final automatic qualifying spot for Team Europe at the British Masters and Lowry now relies on a captain’s pick from Luke Donald.

Lowry said of his selection chances:

“I’m not counting my chickens, I haven’t talked to Luke for months,”

“I said the beginning of the year that Ryder Cup was the biggest goal for me this season and I want to be on that team.”
