PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The No. 4 Texas Men’s Golf team carded a 6-under par 282 on Monday to rally for an impressive seven-stroke victory at The Hayt at Sawgrass Country Club. Junior Luke Potter recorded a final-round 3-under 69 to earn his first career collegiate individual win.
Entering the day in fourth place and 10 strokes off the lead, the Longhorns registered the low team score for the second straight round and were the only squad to shoot under-par on Monday. Texas posted a 54-hole total of 18-under par 846 (290-274-282) to claim its second team title of the season, as the Longhorns previously won the team championship at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 27-29). Duke finished second in the team standings at 11-under 853 (283-280-290), and second-round leader No. 18 Alabama placed third at 6-under 858 (279-275-304). The 15-team field included five squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Mar. 5).
In addition to Potter’s effort, Texas counted scores from freshman Daniel Bennett (2-under 70), junior Christiaan Maas (1-under 71) and junior Tommy Morrison (even-par 72) on Monday.
Potter began the day three strokes behind 36-hole leader David Ford of North Carolina. Potter carded a 3-under 69 to post a three-round score of 10-under 206 (71-66-69) and win the individual title by three strokes over Ford in second at 7-under 209 (69-65-75). South Carolina’s Nathan Franks finished third at 6-under 210 (68-70-72), while Maas (73-67-71) tied for fourth with Jonathan Griz of Alabama (67-68-76) at 5-under 211.
Starting his final round on hole 4, Potter birdied his opening hole before making bogey on 6 to drop back to even-par on the day. He recorded an eagle on the par-five 8th hole and added a birdie on 11 to move to 3-under. Potter made bogey on 17 but responded with a birdie on 18 and closed out his final round with three-straight pars to finish at 3-under on the day. His previous best collegiate finish was a tie for second in the stroke-play portion of the East Lake Cup (Oct. 24, 2022) during his freshman season at Arizona State.
This marks the second straight tournament that a Longhorn player has claimed the individual title. Morrison earned his first career collegiate win in the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 6-8).
Texas is back in action when it competes at the Pauma Valley Invitational on March 17-18 (Monday-Tuesday) in San Diego, Calif.
The Lineup
- Junior Luke Potter carded a final-round 3-under 69 on Monday to claim his first career collegiate individual win. His 54-hole total of 10-under 206 (71-66-69) was three strokes ahead of runner-up David Ford of North Carolina at 7-under 209.
- Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 1-under 71 in his final round and tied for fourth in the individual standings with a three-round score of 5-under 211 (73-67-71). This marked his fourth top-six individual finish in his first six stroke-play events this season. Starting on hole 4, Maas recorded three birdies (holes 8, 14 and 17) against a pair of bogeys (holes 9 and 15) on Monday.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 2-under 70 on Monday and moved up 24 spots to tie for 16th with a 54-hole total of even-par 216 (73-73-70). He has now placed in the top-16 in the individual standings in each of his first four stroke-play events this season. Starting on hole 4, Bennett was 3-over through his opening four holes but made an eagle on the par-five 8th hole to climb to 1-over in his round. He then added birdies on holes 14, 16, 18 and 2 before a bogey on the closing 3rd hole left him at 2-under for the day.
- Junior Tommy Morrison recorded an even-par 72 in his final round and moved up 16 spots to tie for 18th with a three-round score of 1-over 217 (75-70-72). He has now placed in the top-20 in the individual standings in each of his first six stroke-play events this season. Starting on hole 4, Morrison tallied four birdies (holes 5, 8, 13 and 16) against four bogeys on Monday.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert fired a 2-over 74 on Monday and tied for 22nd with a 54-hole total of 2-over 218 (73-71-74). This marked his second-best finish of the season, as he previously tied for 19th at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). Starting on hole 4, Gilbert posted three birdies (holes 7, 8 and 14) during his final round.
