Newcastle United handed Eddie Howe future update as Thomas Tuchel makes shock England move

The German is set to stay on as Three Lions head coach following this summer’s World Cup

Newcastle United have been handed a major update on Eddie Howe’s future after a shock update around the England manager’s job.

Howe has been heavily tipped to take over the Three Lions in the summer after the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel is in charge of England until the tournament ends, and had been expected to step down once his 18 month contract finished.

The Football Association are believed to have Howe on a shortlist of potential candidates for the prestigious role, but reports this morning claim that Tuchel has decided to commit his future to England until 2028 and sign a new deal.

It would be a significant boost to Newcastle, and ensure there is no summer of distracting speculation about their manager’s situation. While Howe has come under some pressure in recent weeks amid some disappointing performances and results, he retains the support of the United owners PIF, chief executive David Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson with no review of the situation expected until the end of the campaign.

Hopkinson was asked last week if he is worried about England approaching Howe in the summer. He responded: “Look, Eddie has been a phenomenal partner to me since the day I met him, he certainly seems like a man very focused on what he’s doing at Newcastle.

“His work rate is incredible. I really like the partnership I have with him . . . Eddie consistently indicates to us how happy he is here.

“I see someone operating with high conviction, and look, I’m someone who pays a lot of attention to what people say, but I also pay a lot of attention to what they do, and I see someone very leaned in and very focused.

“Eddie is not in the room, but I know he’s 100 per cent devoted . . . I’m really happy with the job he’s doing.”

After a traumatic summer in 2025, stability is desperately needed this year. The Alexander Isak transfer saga is still a bruise that United can feel, with the clear after-effects of the scramble to replace the Swede having a direct impact on how the side has coped with the challenges of competing on four fronts this season.

Already there has been talk of Sandro Tonali potentially being touted around Europe should Newcastle not achieve their aims this season, with the club braced for more transfer speculation. So to avoid any unwanted managerial speculation would be a major boost in the corridors of power at St James’ Park.

Tuchel is said to be excited over the prospect of leading England not only in the US, Mexico and Canada but also at a ‘home’ European Championship finals in 2028. His new contract will see him stay in charge of the Three Lions until the end of the tournament, which will be hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

St James’ Park is in line to potentially host England’s round of 16 clash at the Euros after the full match list for the tournament was revealed.
