Matheos Ferreira lit up the FA Youth Cup with a hat-trick against Portsmouth on Tuesday evening
Newcastle United may have a star on their hands in the form of teenage winger Matheos Ferreira.
The 17-year-old scored a hat-trick in Newcastle under-18s’ 5-2 FA Youth Cup third round win over Portsmouth in midweek and, understandably, he has attracted some hype and attention in the wake of that performance.
Ferreira was bright throughout and was box of tricks on the right-hand side, constantly looking to commit his full-back.
His first goal was a cheeky dink over Portsmouth goalkeeper Oscar Glover, his second was an arrowed right-footed effort across the goalkeeper and his third was the by-product of a fantastic run to the far post to get to Alfie Seldon’s cross before his full-back.
His story is unique, too. Born in Ashington and raised in Berwick, Ferreira has Brazilian parents and his mother has Italian heritage. As a result, he is eligible to represent all three countries in the future.
Ferreira used to travel over an hour from Berwick to play for Cramlington Juniors as a youngster before his talent was spotted by Newcastle.
And when he met the media after his hat-trick heroics in the FA Youth Cup, he came across as a grounded, humble young man.
“It was a special night for me and my team-mates,” Ferreira told Chronicle Live.
“It was a special moment as I have had struggles at the start of the season with a hamstring injury and I feel like now I am in a really good moment.
“It was a moment I will remember to get my hat-trick. What has helped me is the staff and coaches have sat me down and showed me different ways to be more of a threat and all three of my goals I was getting in the box or getting in behind defenders.”
His performance impressed Newcastle under-18s head coach Chris Moore, too, who was happy with his contribution at both ends of the pitch.
“The thing with Matheos is he has got loads of ability, loads of cutting edge but he did his bit for the team as well,” Moore told Chronicle Live.
“He worked really hard, did that side of it and that was a good platform for him to show his good bits.
“He has cutting edge, he has scored different goals. He ran in behind, he carried the ball really well and the last goal he has got into the back post and he has gambled on that.”
