Marc Guiu spent his debut season with Chelsea last year on the fringes of the squad, scoring six goals in 16 appearances. However, he’s now completed a loan move to Sunderland to go in search of more first-team minutes.
Chelsea signed Marc Guiu for just £5m (BBC) from Barcelona in July 2024, which still looks like such a shrewd signing.
Even though the 19-year-old centre-forward impressed when he played for the Blues, the competition for places has only cranked up with the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Therefore, we are delighted to see him join Premier League rivals Sunderland on a season-long loan to continue his development.
The encouraging news is that Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca still views Guiu in his long-term plans, so we will be keeping a close eye on his spell at Sunderland. It feels like a superb opportunity for the teenager to prove himself in the top division at the Stadium of Light because he was starved of Premier League action last season.

Marc Guiu picks Chelsea trio in teammates five-a-side
As part of his media duties at a new club, Guiu was asked on Sunderland’s TikTok to select a five-a-side made up of his best-ever teammates.
Interestingly, the Spanish youngster chose the Chelsea trio Marc Cucurella, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez after spending last season with them. He picked footballing giants and former Barcelona teammates Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski as well.

It may surprise Chelsea fans to see Cole Palmer omitted from Guiu’s selection, but he’s opted for Barcelona superstar Yamal as part of a balanced team.
In terms of Cucurella’s inclusion, he’s emerged as one of the world’s best left-backs across the last year. We suspect the former Barcelona academy graduate would thrive at five-a-side, too.
Meanwhile, Fernandez loves playing alongside Caicedo, and the Chelsea central midfielders were both truly outstanding last season. Without a doubt, they are good enough to be the cornerstone of a successful Blues side moving forward.

Marc Guiu can replicate Armando Broja success
Back in the 2021/22 season, Armando Broja, who was 19 at the time, enjoyed a brilliant year when Chelsea loaned him to Southampton.
The Albanian striker scored nine goals in 38 games across all competitions during a productive season-long loan with Southampton. Unfortunately, the 23-year-old’s career has been stop-start since because of injuries.
Even so, Broja developed massively as a teenager at Southampton, experiencing top-flight football as the Saints finished 15th in the Premier League a few years ago.
When we look at current Chelsea youngster Guiu, we’re confident he can do something similar at Sunderland. Chelsea rejected permanent offers for Guiu earlier this summer, so he’s very much still in the long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.
