Ian Wilkerson’s LIV Golf Chicago preview
Joaquin Niemann won his fifth LIV event of the season at the JCB Golf & Country Club last month and the Chilean can confirm the individual crown in Chicago this week, just as Jon Rahm did 12 months ago.
Rahm is without a victory this season but has been the model of consistency, finishing no lower than 11th in 11 outings, and his ability to find greens-in-regulation will be regarded as a big asset this week.
Ian Wilkerson’s top tip
Talor Gooch 16-1
While much of the attention at Bolingbrook Golf Club will be on whether Niemann can claim yet another title, there is potential for a few players to fly under the radar and one of those is Talor Gooch.
Gooch was a star at the inception of the breakaway tour and looks to have found his feet again after getting his campaign off to a poor start.
He was third in South Korea and could have benefited from not being involved in the Majors this year as he has subsequently won at Valderrama, where he beat home favourite Rahm by a shot, and was then a creditable fourth at the UK gathering.
He is eighth in the greens-in-regulation statistics and was a decent 15th at Bolingbrook last year, so this could be another week when he excels.
Next best bet
Tom McKibbin 33-1
Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin is another player who has discovered some good form towards the end of his first LIV season.
After a few indifferent weeks, McKibbin has got his act together, finishing fifth in Dallas, where he was just one shot off the pace, and then fourth at Valderrama, where he recovered from the disappointment of an opening 74.
Missing the cut at the Open at the familiar Royal Portrush was a blow but his 11th at the JCB Golf & Country Club was not a bad effort and as the seventh best LIV player in terms of hitting greens in regulation, he could provide his followers with another strong showing.
