Chelsea have only just finished the January transfer window and they’ve already identified areas to strengthen in the summer.
The January transfer window was a forgettable experience for many Chelsea supporters, as the promise of a midfielder and a defender wasn’t delivered.
Chelsea first missed out on Douglas Luiz, but there were varying reports, with some saying they walked away and others saying he chose Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, the pursuit of a centre-back was a complete waste of time. Countless hours of negotiations over Jeremy Jacquet, only for him to want to join Liverpool after registering their interest.
Josh Acheampong staying and injured players returning will help, but it’s clear Chelsea wanted to make signings as they’ve already made their transfer wishlist for the summer.
Out of Andrey Santos, Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian, who deserves a World Cup place the most?🤔
Carlo Ancelotti thinks it’s Estevao…
Chelsea want a centre-back, a midfielder and an attacker
According to Simon Johnson of the Athletic, Chelsea desire a CB (regardless of Sarr), a midfielder and an attacker.
And he also stated that it should not be forgotten that a deal for Geovany Quenda is already in place for him to join this summer. A decision will also be made on GK Mike Penders.
So it appears as if Chelsea want another centre-back after all, plus the central midfielder you would guess from missing out this month.
And the attacker would probably be a striker, given Liam Delap’s struggles and Joao Pedro not being an out-and-out number nine.
Admit it, you miss Nicolas Jackson 😢
Liam Delap has been a huge disappointment!
Chelsea need another number 10
Chelsea’s tactical shift under Liam Rosenior has created a need for a specialist number 10. Currently, there is an extreme over-reliance on Cole Palmer, whose fitness has taken a hit.
With Christopher Nkunku and Facundo Buonanotte no longer at the club, Palmer is the only out-and-out number 10. This was highlighted in the recent Carabao Cup exit to Arsenal, where Chelsea appeared tactically stagnant and were unable to break down a low block without a secondary playmaker to operate in the half-spaces.
The need is further amplified by Rosenior’s preference for a double pivot consisting of Moises Caicedo and Andrey Santos. This setup has moved Enzo Fernandez into a more permanent number 10 role, yet the Argentine is naturally a deep-lying playmaker.
And given Palmer’s fragility, Chelsea risk burning out one of their most valuable assets in a 60-game season.
