Ex-Bradford City captain Richie Smallwood joins Tranmere

The former Bantams skipper yesterday signed a one-year deal on the Wirral.

And he reckons Tranmere’s Campus training base beats Woodhouse Grove at Apperley Bridge.

“The building is one of the better ones I’ve been in, especially in the last couple of clubs,” he said. “The facilities off the pitch have not always been great.

“It’s really impressive and got everything you need and more. Apparently, the pitches are superb for the level anyway.

“It will be a big surprise to me because the facilities at other places have not been so great after the last couple of seasons, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

There had been a lack of speculation about Smallwood’s next destination until Tranmere made their move. He admitted it had been a test of patience at times.

“A lot of the summer was a lot of frustration with not much happening and it was quite slow. But once Tranmere showed the interest, it moved quickly.

“Once I spoke to the manager, it was only here. He acted so quickly and so professionally.

“We had a Zoom call and he told me his position and where he sees me. Once I heard that, the offer was practically in straight after the call and we were agreed.

“Obviously, experience goes a long way in this game. Managers and coaches love a bit of experience within the group just to help and nurture the young lads and the ones who’ve not been in the game so long.

“I’ve done a few different leadership roles within the last couple of clubs and really enjoyed it. Hopefully people can learn off how I go about day to day and get ready for games and how many games you can play.”

Speaking to the club’s official media, Smallwood recalled some good battles for City at Prenton Park – and the impact of Andy Cook against one of his old clubs.

“I’ve had a couple of good games over the last three seasons. It gets loud, it gets tasty, it gets juicy.

“They’ve always played a tough attacking style and given us really good games. We’ve just had a certain striker who’s come back to haunt this club in the past couple of seasons.

“Hopefully we don’t play him any time soon and so he can’t do it again.”

Tranmere boss Andy Crosby sees Smallwood as a big influence within the squad on and off the pitch.

“Richie is a proven leader who brings real experience and know-how to the group,” he said.

“He’s captained teams and been promoted from both League One and League Two, so he understands exactly what it takes to be successful.

“On the pitch, he gives us control, composure, and real tactical discipline in midfield. Off the pitch, he sets the tone – his standards, mentality, and professionalism will have a big impact on the group.”
