Criticised Wiltshire golf shop and driving range plans could change

The new golfing and leisure facility is being proposed for Wiltshire Hotel, a 15-minute drive from Swindon and located on the edge of Royal Wootton Bassett.

Plans were first submitted to Wiltshire Council back in March 2025, and a decision was set to be made by December 1.

Originally, Wiltshire Hotel hoped to build the new driving range just beyond the hotel and leisure building which currently stands at the site.

As well as a cafe/bar and golf shop, the new driving range would come with a training room and tourist accommodation.

The two existing golf courses (18 and 9 holes each) would need to be reorganised for this to take place.

However, the deadline for making a decision on this has now been and gone, with no conclusion reached.

Council officers are now in discussions with Wiltshire Hotel about potentially revising plans following heavy criticism from local golfers.

The current driving range at the site has been described as “insufficient length” and “of poor quality to properly practice or be used for commercial purposes.”

The application reads: “It is important that The Wiltshire remains competitive and adapts to social, economic and recreational changes within the industry.

“The golfing industry, like many others, is suffering from the twin effects of the cost of living crisis with significant rises in their own operational costs, and the financial and time pressures faced by their members.

“Key to the success of any club lies in the quality of its golf course and facilities.

“As it currently stands, The Wiltshire is unable to match its local competitors in terms of the quality of its driving range and associated facilities.”

However, several golfers who regularly use the existing course have raised objections over these new plans.

Commenting on the application, nearby residents Gail Smith and Trish Booth said: “It will result in the unnecessary remodelling of a course designed by Peter Alliss.

“There is an existing driving range that has been allowed to fall into disrepair, which is situated in an acceptable position.”

A spokesperson for the Wiltshire Leisure Village Leaseholders Association added: “A new driving range would be great for local tourism and for the future viability of the Wiltshire Golf Club, however, not in the proposed location.

“An alternative site should be found which does not require any restructuring of this highly acclaimed golf course.”

Wiltshire Council is now seeking to negotiate an extension of the decision deadline as talks about revising the plans remain ongoing.
