Charlotte Begins Round One of NCAA Bremerton Regional on Monday

BREMERTON, Wa. – Charlotte Men’s Golf is preparing for the NCAA Bremerton Regional that begins Monday (May 12) through Wednesday (May 14) with 18 holes scheduled for each day at the Gold Mountain Golf Club. The course will be played at Par-72 measuring at 7,167 yards for rounds one and three and 7,144 yards for round two.

After winning the American Athletic Conference Championship and clinching an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, Charlotte Men’s Golf has been selected as the seventh seed in the Bremerton Regional to mark Charlotte’s 20th NCAA Regional appearance and its first in The American.

“Gold Mountain Golf Club is a phenomenal golf course,” said Head Coach Ryan Cabbage. “The greens are firm, and the staff does a great job maintaining it from the tee to green. It will be a great challenge this week for the team. Our west coast trips in the past have helped prepare us for the time zone change and getting acclimated. Going into round one, it will be important for us to be patient and understand game management to keep ourselves in the fairway and have scoring opportunities.”

NCAA Regionals are held May 12-14 at six regional sites. The top five finishing teams at each regional site and lowest individual on a non-advancing team will clinch a trip to the NCAA National Championship, hosted at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California May 23-28. In total, 30 teams and six individuals will compete for the national title.

“Tournaments like these are why we put the work in every day,” said Caden Baker. “While this is a great moment to celebrate, it is important for us to stay focused and not get too high on the moment. We have had success on the west coast in the past and will look to continue that in Washington.”

Charlotte ended the season with an 80-37-2 record and a 41st overall spot in the Scoreboard by Clippd rankings. Ryan Cabbage was named the AAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year, while Justin Matthews, Seb Cave, and Daniel Boone, Jr. were named to the all-conference team. This is Cabbage’s third Coach of the Year award, in as many conferences also receiving the recognition from the A-10 in 2013, and C-USA in 2022.

Seb Cave paced the Charlotte lineup throughout the AAC Championship, finishing in third place individually at 205 (-11). Daniel Boone, Jr. rebounded from a tough first round performance (73, +1) to shoot six under on day two (66) and carding a 68 (-4) in the final round to help propel the Niners over South Florida. Justin Matthews, who holds the highest Scoreboard individual ranking at 104th, shot six under par in the final round to help complete the team’s comeback after they entered the day trailing by five strokes.

“As the season has progressed, I have tried to play more freely,” said Justin Matthews. “At times it is easy to force things, but the coaching staff has preached to let things come to us on the course. I believe this has been true for our team as a whole and behind our success. We focus on the game plan and not treating the post season differently than a normal tournament. “

South Florida joins Charlotte in the field as the 5th seed in the regional. Arizona State earned the top seed while SEC champion Florida is the second seed. Utah and South Carolina are the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
