CANADIAN COLLEGIATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS: UBC sweeps both titles as McGill misses cut

KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The UBC Thunderbirds successfully defended their titles in both the men’s and women’s divisions on Friday but came up short on the top spot in the individual championships to cap off a memorable Canadian University / College Championship at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops, B.C.

The Thunderbirds’ male contingent secured their ninth national title after shooting a collective 21-under par 1,131 (292-275-288-276) through four rounds, finishing 24 strokes ahead of second-place Victoria (+3) in a field of 19 schools. Among Quebec-based institutions from the RSEQ conference, Laval led the way, finishing third overall (+26), followed by the Montréal Carabins in fourth (+31). Rounding out the Top 9 was Humber College (+32), Fraser Valley (+33), Queen’s (+39), Laurier (+40) and UBC Okanagan (+45).

Bishop’s and McGill missed the cut after the first three rounds, shooting 909 and 948, respectively. Other schools who missed the cut were Windsor, McMaster, Alberta, Carleton, Waterloo, Calgary, Guelph and Brock.

Alek Mauro of the Windsor Lancers was able to overcome a late charge from Anthony Jomphe of the Montreal Carabins to hold steady and secure the individual men’s title by just a single stroke after a fourth round score of 74.

McGill was represented by five golfers. Over the first three rounds, the Redbirds were paced by Camden Purboo, an economics junior, who tied for 56th overall before the playoff round with 17-over-par 233, shooting rounds of 79, 77 and 77. Adley Abols, a freshman who made history with McGill’s first male hole-in-one last fall, tied for 68th at +20 (80-81-75), showing flashes of potential but lacking the consistency needed to climb the leaderboard. Simon Savaria, a junior majoring in applied mathematics, tied for 87th at 30-over (79-90-77). He was tied with teammate Ben Blanshay, a mechanical engineering junior, who shot rounds of 83, 85 and 78. Finally, Gregor Lawson, another junior, tied for 91st at +31 (86-77-84).

In the women’s division, UBC put the finishing touches on their eighth consecutive national championship on Friday with a collective score of 14-under par 850 (216-215-214-205).  UBC-Okanagan finished second at +15, followed by Victoria (+51), Laval (+84), Fraser Valley (+89) and Humber (+105). Seven teams missed the cut, including Queen’s, Toronto, Alberta, Guelph, Bishop’s, Laurier and Calgary.

The individual women’s champion was UBC-Okanagan’s Julia Alexander-Carew, who birdied the 18th hole to wrap up Friday with her best round of the tournament and a five-under 67. She finished with a 7-under 281 (71-71-72-75) over her four rounds.
