Manchester United are advancing with a potential move for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Ruben Amorim’s side are in the market for a new No.9 and Sesko, 22, has emerged as their preferred option.

Ollie Watkins had been considered, but Aston Villa remain insistent that the England international is not for sale. Indeed, United have shifted their focus to Sesko, who scored 21 goals in 45 matches last season.

The Manchester Evening News understands that United have received encouragement to pursue Sesko and have made contact with Leipzig about a possible deal. Newcastle United also want the Slovenian with Alexander Isak’s long-term future in doubt.

Sesko signed a five-year contract at Leipzig last summer and his new deal came with the understanding that if an elite club – by his definition – offered in the region of £69million to £78m, the German side would allow him to leave.

If United sign Sesko, he would complete a ‘dream’ front three and attacking line-up for Ruben Amorim next season. The former Red Bull Salzburg forward would come in and lead the line with Rasmus Hojlund acting as the back-up.

Behind Sesko would be the two attacking midfielders in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system. First, Matheus Cunha would slot into the left No.10 position following his £62.5m move from Wolves last month.

Cunha, 26, netted 17 times and provided six assists in 36 appearances for Vitor Pereira’s side in 2024/25 and is going to bring some more attacking flair and creative spark to United’s front line.

Alongside Cunha in the right No.10 position would be another new signing, this time Bryan Mbeumo after he completed a £65m plus add-ons move to Old Trafford earlier this month.

Mbeumo, 25, found the net on 20 occasions and added nine assists in 42 matches for Brentford last season and would add some proven Premier League class, like Cunha, to United’s attack.

Bruno Fernandes therefore would drop back into central midfield alongside one of Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte or Kobbie Mainoo. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo would be used as the two wing-backs.

With Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo as United’s new-look dream front three, Hojlund, Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount would provide support from the bench and come in when required.

That would leave Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho to be sold before the end of the summer transfer window. It was reported on Tuesday that United were willing to sell Garnacho for around £30m, while Antony and Sancho are expected to depart the Reds in the coming weeks.
