A Passion for the Outdoors
Nathan’s inspiration to become a greenkeeper stemmed from his love for working outdoors. As a young man, he enjoyed grass-cutting jobs, which led him to pursue a career in greenkeeping. With 29 years of experience across various golf courses, Nathan brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our club.
A Day in the Life of a Greenkeeper
Nathan’s day begins early, contributing to setting up the course for the day’s play. His tasks include ensuring the course is presentable and maintaining the highest standards. Afternoons are dedicated to ongoing maintenance, all while ensuring members and visitors enjoy their rounds without interruption.
Overcoming Challenges
Adverse weather conditions pose significant challenges in maintaining the greens. Soft, wet conditions can lead to imperfections like footprints and pitch marks. Nathan advises members to wear appropriate footwear and diligently repair their divots to help maintain a true putting surface for everyone.
Pride in the Craft
Nathan finds immense satisfaction in witnessing the visible improvements on the course after maintenance, never tiring of creating beautifully striped greens and fairways. During the challenging winters of recent years, he and his brother Marcus took the initiative to construct makeshift footbridges over impassable areas of the course. These temporary structures enabled the team to reopen several holes more swiftly, allowing golfers to resume play as soon as possible. Nathan is particularly proud of how the team came together during these times, battling frost, ice, and relentless rain to keep the course playable for members.
Beyond the Greens
When he’s not on the course, Nathan enjoys singing and performing, either solo or with his band, often entertaining at clubhouse events like the captain’s event or New Year’s Eve celebrations. He also cherishes spending quality time with his wife and daughter.
