A Twilight Round In May At Washtenaw Golf Club

A Twilight Round In May At Washtenaw Golf Club

I am torn as to whether my favorite time to play golf is first thing in the morning or while racing against the dark to finish a round in the evening.

Morning rounds are speedy. Even if I am not first off the tee, the usual suspects ahead of me are also swift players. I can finish a round in under three hours and have the rest of the day ahead of me.

Evening twilight rounds tend to be slower. There are always groups ahead, often enjoying a leisurely round. That, however, gives me the opportunity to play a couple of balls and get some practice in.

Morning rounds tend to be cooler, but are almost always wet. “Dewsweeping” is an accurate term. On occasion, I have to change my shoes and socks at the turn.

Evening rounds are (usually) drier, but warmer. The course has had the whole day to warm up and dry out. Once the sun dips down below the trees, howeve,r it gets much more

Both, however, offer ideal opportunities for golden hour photography. Here are a few from a recent evening round.

There are a couple of hawks at Washtenaw Golf Club that have decimated the local squirrel and rabbit population.

Actually, it is worse than decimation. Decimation originally was a punishment in the Roman Army where one in every ten men was randomly killed as a punishment for the failure of unit.

The hawks have eaten far more than one in ten squirrels. It’s more like a local squirrel extinction.

I love the way the setting sun casts long shadows across this hole.
