Action at the 89th Masters unofficially kicks off Wednesday with one of the great side traditions within the tradition unlike any other. The Masters Par 3 Contest, nestled on the same property and held each Wednesday prior to the beginning of championship competition, features happy-go-lucky golf that comes with much less tension than what is to be expected Thursday to Sunday.
Largely a family event, the Par 3 Contest sees golfers bring their significant others and/or children onto the Par 3 Course — all dressed in signature white Augusta National caddie jumpsuits. There will be children taking putts and running around the fairway, trick shots galore — skipping the ball over water — and ultimately an official winner. The true value of the Par 3 Contest, though, is that it allows players to relax.
A word of warning for the Par 3 Contest winner: You’re unlikely to win the Masters. In fact, it has never happened since the event was introduced in 1960. There have been an astounding 112 holes-in-one made — including five last year and nine (!) in 2016 alone. CBS Sports will be with you the entire way as preparation continues for the 2025 Masters.
