The Ithaca College golf team officially began its spring season this weekend, March 29-30, as the Bombers competed in two separate Vassar College Invitationals and both rounds were hosted at Casperkill Country Club.
The Vassar Invitational I took place on Saturday between five schools – No. 5 Wellesley ‘B’, No. 12 Babson, Wesleyan, Vassar and Ithaca. The Bombers prevailed on the day with a team round of 321 (+33) to beat out Babson by one stroke. Wellesley was two strokes back, while Wesleyan shot 337 and Vassar finished off the day with 366.
Rheanna DeCrow was the top golfer for IC on Saturday with a 79 (+7), while Annika Michel and Annelise Stencel tied fourth with 80 (+8). Helena Winterberg finished 13th with an 82 (+10) and Abby Bladen was 24th with a 95 (+23).
DeCrow fired a pair of birdies – 1st and 6th – on the front nine to go out plus-1 with 37 and carded four pars on the back. Michel birdied one hole during her round on the par-5 5th, while Stencel birdied the 1st and 5th holes. Winterberg carded three birdies on Saturday – the 5th, 14th and 16th. Bladen finished her round with four pars.
On Sunday, the Bombers shaved a stroke of their previous round with 320 (+32) and finished third among six teams. Babson won the event with 311 (+23), while Wesleyan was the runner-up at 317 (+29). Wellesley finished behind IC by a stroke and Vassar posted 353 (+65). Nichols also competed and was sixth with 422.
DeCrow and Stencel were the top performers on Sunday with 79s (+7) to tie for ninth. Winterberg and Bladen each carded 81s (+9) to tie for 15th and Michel finished 17th with 82 (+10).
Stencel birdied three holes during the round, while DeCrow shot one birdie. Bladen also birdied three holes and Winterberg carded one. Michel parred half her round on Sunday.
IC is off next weekend and will head to Cortland on April 12-13.
