Former Augusta National employee sentenced for stealing Masters items


AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A former warehouse assistant for Augusta National Golf Club was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to transporting millions of dollars worth of stolen Masters memorabilia and historic items, including one of Arnold Palmer’s green jackets.

The sentence for Richard Brendan Globensky is a year and a day in prison, plus restitution to Augusta National of $3,448,842.

“The funds Globensky obtained enabled him and his spouse to live a lifestyle far beyond their means. The manner in which he spent the proceeds suggests greed was his primary motivation for committing the offense,” said Joseph D. Fitzpatrick Assistant U.S. Attorney Northern District of Illinois, where Globensky was sentenced.

He will be ordered to report to prison at a later date, authorities said.

Globensky pleaded guilty to a charge of transporting and transferring stolen goods in interstate commerce, according to the Northern District of Illinois.

According to the charging documents, Globensky is accused of transporting the goods and merchandise from 2009 until about 2022 to Tampa, Fla.

The stolen items also included Ben Hogans’s green jacket, programs from 1934 and 1935, a clubhouse trophy and letters and documents signed by Bobby Jones.

Globensky sold the merchandise to the online broker in Florida for around $5.3 million, the plea agreement states.

The charging documents state Globensky knew the items were stolen, converted and taken by fraud.
