Dale Complete Ed Francis Signing

The midfielder joins us from League One side Exeter City on a two-and-a-half-year-deal.

Francis, who won promotion from the National League in 2023, commented:

“I’m absolutely thrilled”, says the 26-year-old.

“As soon as I heard the interest was there, it was something I wanted to get done.

“It feels like a long time coming, it was two years ago when we first spoke and I believe everything happens for a reason.

“I’ve seen a few familiar faces which is nice and I know it’s going to be exciting.

“Hopefully I can bring a bit of experience to the boys that are already flying.”

Ed’s career started at under-six level with Manchester City, spending much of his time training at Rochdale’s current base Platt Lane. He went on to sign his first professional deal in 2018 after captaining the Under-23 side including the likes of Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz.

From there, Francis had a short spell out in the Netherlands with Almere City before linking up with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the age of 19.

He worked under Rob Edwards in the Midlands which included another loan spell in Europe, this time in Switzerland.

In late 2020, the versatile man joined League Two’s Harrogate Town followed by a summer move to Notts County in the fifth tier. He was part of Luke Williams’ promotion winning side, whilst spending time with fellow National League side Gateshead, who he then joined permanently.

After more silverware with the Heed, claiming the FA Trophy, a move to the opposite end of the country with Exeter City was confirmed in 2024 as he penned a two-year deal.

Francis will wear the number 36 shirt throughout his time at the Crown Oil Arena.

Welcome, Ed!
