South Winchester Golf Club – consultation on 1,200-homes scheme

Bloor Homes has opened a public consultation on its proposals for Manor Parks, a new community that would be built on land at South Winchester Golf Course.

The consultation will run until Wednesday, February 18.

Bloor’s plans include up to 1,200 homes, 40 per cent of which will be affordable, as well as a new mobility hub, primary school, sports hub, new public transport links, and new green spaces.

The Chronicle has reported for several years on Bloor’s ambitions for the golf course which opened on Pitt Manor Farm in the early 1990s.

A Bloor Homes representative said: “We are in a position to deliver much-needed new homes and community facilities for Winchester, one of the least affordable cities to buy a home in the country.

“Our public webinars and local engagement have given us invaluable feedback and insight into the city’s needs and we have responded to these by designing a sustainable community, which we believe will make a great contribution to Winchester life.

“Now it is the public’s turn to have their say on our proposals and offer any feedback to help us improve our proposals.”

However, ward councillors for Oliver’s Battery and Badger Farm have expressed their concerns about the scheme.

Cllr Brian Laming (Lib Dem) said: “Needless to say this proposed application is not in the local plan nor the emerging new local plan. Local residents have expressed their views on this many times as it is unwanted. There is a lack of infrastructure for such a large development of 1,200 houses. This would make it a larger development than Badger Farm and nearly twice the size of Oliver’s Battery. Winchester’s Council has a local planning which has served Winchester well and will continue in the future.

“I am sure the residents will make their views known to both the developer and the council.”

Cllr Jan Warwick (Conservative) said: “They launched this without any notice and it is a very short timescale. It had not even opened when I last checked. It is not a long time for people to a look at the plans and get their thoughts into the consultation. So, that is not good.

“Another issue that we have is that the top of Romsey Road is very congested. Adding 1,200 new homes will be a real issue for residents. It is a big concern for me that they even proposing something on that golf course.”
