Ex-Everton and Nottingham Forest star latest to join Hull City’s promotion push

The Tigers have added the experienced playmaker to their squad

Hull City have completed the signing of Kieran Dowell from Scottish giants Rangers in their latest piece of eye-catching January transfer business.

Dowell, the former Everton, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United playmaker, has agreed an 18-month contract at the MKM Stadium, after negotiating his exit from Ibrox with six months left on his existing deal.

The 28-year-old arrives in time to be in the City squad that takes on Swansea City on Saturday, aiming to make it three straight wins after successive away victories at Southampton and Preston North End in the past few days.

Dowell, who came through Everton’s academy and went on to play for England’s youth age groups between Under-16 and Under-21, had been frustrated with his lack of football in Scotland this season, but he did play an hour in the 5-0 win over Annan Athletic in the Scottish Cup last Friday night, and scored.

That was just one of seven appearances for the Glasgow outfit this season, and now returns to England with City two years on from when they tried to sign him before he headed north of the border.

A versatile player capable of playing across midfield and further forward, Dowell has notched up 123 appearances in the Championship, playing for the likes of Forest, Norwich City and Sheffield United. He’s also played 21 times in the Premier League for Everton, scoring once.

The experienced player, who can play anywhere across the front third of the pitch, or deeper if required, follows Yu Hirakawa in arriving on loan from Bristol City. Toby Collyer and Paddy McNair are also set to complete their moves to East Yorkshire in the next few days.
