Scott Brown has weighed in on the growing speculation linking Callum McGregor with a possible move to Saudi Arabia, as rumours continue to swirl around Brendan Rodgers’ reported interest in his former Celtic captain.
The discussion comes as Celtic navigate a turbulent period both on and off the pitch, with questions being asked about leadership, stability, and the club’s long-term direction. Against that backdrop, any suggestion that McGregor could be tempted away has struck a nerve among supporters.
McGregor has been central to Celtic’s success over recent seasons, not just for his performances but for his presence and standards inside the dressing room. As captain, he has carried responsibility through title races, European nights, and periods of transition at the club.
Brown knows better than most what McGregor brings, having worn the armband himself and later watched his former teammate grow into the role. His comments reflect a wider concern that losing such a figure, even for significant money, could come at a heavy sporting cost.
He said: (The Breakdown), “If I was Brendan I would try and take him right away. There’s a lot of money in Saudi. One thing about every football team, you are a selling team. We can all say ‘we don’t want to let him go’, but at the end of the day, money does talk.
“If it’s going to benefit Celtic, if it’s going to benefit Cal… you never know what can happen. But will Cal want to leave really, to go to Saudi? I don’t really think so. He enjoys his football, he enjoys being at the club. He’s done a great job.
“I think you need to keep Callum McGregor in that team. Keep Callum no matter what. Because Kyle knows the club, knows what it’s all about. He’s won so many trophies over the years and he’s missed the reliable.
“And I think that’s a big thing. Celtic need to get back to that core in the middle of the park, centre half and centre forward, reliable, robust.
“Callum looks after himself, unbelievable. That’s why he plays week in, week out. And he’s probably one of the best pros that I’ve ever seen. So the thing for Cal. who plays 65 games a season, he gave up Scotland to focus on his Celtic career.
“Which is fantastic because it’ll hopefully give him that longevity. You’d done that, didn’t you? I’d done that because I was terrible with Scotland. See, as soon as I left Scotland, they went back to the Euros.”
Brown’s comments underline how rare McGregor’s profile is within the modern game, especially for a club that relies on continuity as much as talent. Celtic have often spoken about rebuilding cycles, yet figures like McGregor provide the bridge between generations.
There is also the broader context of what Celtic want to be in the coming years, particularly as they look to reassert themselves domestically and improve their standing in Europe. Losing a captain who sets the tone every week would force another reset at a time when certainty is badly needed.

Financial reality cannot be ignored, and Brown acknowledged that modern football always comes back to money at some point. Still, his view was clear that not every asset should be moved on simply because an offer is attractive.
For now, McGregor remains under contract and focused on leading Celtic through the challenges ahead.
Brown’s message was simple and grounded in experience, keep the captain, protect the core of the team, and give the club its best chance to move forward together.
