Phillips and his teammates have secured legendary status in Paisley after downing the Hoops to lift the trophy on Sunday
St Mirren cup hero Killian Phillips poked fun at Celtic by joking that he’d been signed for a ‘bag of crisps’ in comparison to the Hoops’ expensively assembled squad.
The Paisley side lifted their first trophy in 13 years by downing the Premiership champions 3-1 in the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday, giving boss Stephen Robinson his first piece of silverware in his coaching career and inflicting more misery on new Parkhead gaffer Wilfried Nancy. Former Aberdeen loanee Phillips joined the Buddies on a permanent basis from Crystal Palace in the summer after an initial loan period and has gone onto form a key part of Robinson’s team.
The 23-year-old’s performances have seen him win three caps at senior level for the Republic of Ireland and he played the full 90 minutes on an afternoon at the national stadium that no St Mirren fan will ever forget. During the jubilant post-match celebrations, Phillips took a moment to chat to Sam North’s Footy Adventures Youtube channel and said: “It was unbelievable.
“I don’t want to be sentimental with my career but this one means a lot more. The difference in the the two clubs is extortionate, you know, with the budgets and stuff like that. They bought players for £10million and I was bought for a bleeding bag of crisps.
“It was unbelievable to go and do this against the best team in the country in the last 20-30 years.
“We believed we could win all week. They had beaten us two times in a row but they’d only been ahead by one.”
Goalkeeper Shamal George returned to Scotland on loan with the Buddies after an injury ravaged year at Wycombe and was ecstatic to get his hands on his first major piece of silverware.
Speaking to the same channel, he added: “I’m buzzing. I am really enjoying it as I hadn’t played football properly for over a year.
“So coming here and getting back playing is unbelievable. It was god’s plan.
“My family were all here and so was my grandad who we lost a few weeks ago. So yeah, unbelievable.”
