The winger is eligible to play for Scotland through is grandparents having only represented the Three Lions in a non-competitive setting
Harvey Barnes has refused to close the door on representing Scotland at international level but admits there have been no talks about switching his allegiances from England.
The 27-year-old won his maiden cap for the Three Lions during his spell at Leicester City in 2020, having previously represented his country at U20 and U21 level.
However, because the Newcastle star’s England debut came as a substitute in a friendly encounter with Wales, he is still eligible to play for Scotland, who he qualifies for through his grandparents.
The Scots ended their 27-year-long wait to reach the World Cup finals by defeating Denmark 4-2 at Hampden on Tuesday night to secure automatic qualification for next summer’s tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico.
And while boss Steve Clarke will have some tough decisions to make in some areas when he selects his 26-man squad, one position where he is not blessed with too many options is wide men.
Ben Gannon-Doak has made a bright start to his Scotland career but had to be replaced with just 21 minutes on the clock against the Danes through injury.
Ryan Christie can operate in the wide areas but is much more effective in the middle of the park, having excelled as a holding midfielder under Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth.
Barnes was happy to see the Dark Blues end their World Cup finals hoodoo and is aware that he could still change his international allegiances.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It’s not something I’ve really spoken about or put thought into recently.
“There’s always been talk about it and a while ago there was bits and bobs about it. But recently it’s not cropped up.
“It was great to see them win and get through last night, it was a crazy game, and I’m sure everyone in Scotland enjoyed themselves.
“Is it closed off? No, of course it’s not.
“I’ve obviously played for England and I know the eligibility side of it is still there so it’s hard to say either way but there’s been no real chats or progression in that sense.”
